Selling Websites To Newbies
There are several problems when selling websites to the newbie market. They can be lured into the online game with stories of 13 year old kids making fortunes with their blogs and as such have high hopes for their own online adventure.
For this reason they like to buy websites that have the potential for huge amounts of traffic. This puts the conscientious seller in a bit of a dilemma. As someone who’s been there done that, the experienced online entrepreneur understands that lots of traffic potential means lots of competition.
Lots of competition means being buried on page 32 of the Google search results and zero traffic. You could argue this isn’t your problem but if you want to build a genuine online business selling websites rather than just make a fast buck you need to consider this and other problems the newbie faces.
When I was targeting this market I would split the difference if I couldn’t find untapped niches and build sites on topics with medium competition. This ensured enough traffic potential for a sale but also gave the newbie a fighting chance as long as they were happy to put the work in.
Another method I used was to include an article that would rank with minor promotion even if the others would struggle. An example would be building a blog about acne.
Huge potential for traffic means a quick sale but the newbie is going to struggle to see a return on his investment so I would do some digging to find at least one key phrase for an article with less than 25K competing but with potential traffic of at least a few thousand a month.
At least that way if they followed my basic promotion tips they would see a profit and I would sleep at night.
My basic promotion tips came in the form of an ebook report which I wrote myself explaining the importance of link building and how to get links.
It also had a section on keyword research, article writing, Wordpress and a few other bits and bobs to point them in the right direction. This report took an afternoon to write but paid for itself in hosting affiliate sales many times over.
I would also reply in a timely manner to emails requesting help and advice even though this dug into my time and so lowered my profit margins.
In the end these added touches paid off as my client base grew and I no longer needed to list websites for sale, I just mailed my list and the websites were sold on a first come basis.
Selling websites to newbies requires a different mindset. They have a dream but don’t know how to set up a blog, get it started, get and set up hosting etc. You can fulfill their needs and make a lot of money but you also want to look after them.
By showing them how to get their website making just a dollar or two a day means the dream stays alive as they see the potential and they will be back to buy more websites from you.
